When are the best times to visit the stunning Hunter Valley region?
Best Hunter Valley Tour Times? When should you go?
In Autumn I was chatting to a photographer about the best time to visit the Hunter Valley on a wine tasting tour, not just for their photographs but for the atmosphere too. Very, very tough to answer as every season brings something different to the Hunter Valley and every single person who visits takes something different away. The season, weather & activities all contribute to the emotional side of “the best time to visit”. During September, October & November (Spring time in Australia) it starts to warm up a bit, but you can still feel the freshness in the air, the vines are super green and we see some buds come through.
Harvest is from approx Dec – Feb (Summer) and it is a very vibrant time with lots of activities too. Its becomes drier in the Hunter Valley, perfect for wine tasting a cold crisp semillion or a sparkling white…yum (Feels great driving in a nice air conditioned vehicle too).
March, April, May (Autumn) brings cooler temperatures, fresh colours and aspecial calm feeling after a long and busy summer. Time to start warming up on reds and fortified wines… a Hunter Valley Shiraz suits nicely.
During the colder months, June, July & August (Winter) the Hunter Valley transforms again and fog and mist snake through the valley giving it a special ghostly feeling. People lean towards robust red wines (match it with some dark chocolate?), a hearty meal at lunch…plus a stop at the Hunter Distillery for some Organic Vodka and Schnapps does help to warm you up. I guess, the point is that everyone is unique and we all find something special at different times/season in the year so its important not to get too hung up on selecting the right season, no matter when you visit you are going to take something special away. If you are considering taking a Hunter Valley wine tasting tour we have departures Tuesdays | Thursdays | Fridays | Saturdays | Sundays. We provide pick ups in Sydney & in the Hunter Valley.
